CALLED TO FREEDOM

“For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love be servants of one another. For the whole law is fulfilled in one word, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ But if you bite and devour one another take heed that you are not consumed by one another.” (Gal 5: 13-15)
Freedom! What does it mean? It means I can stop fighting people, and stop struggling to control them. Because in the Spirit, Whose gifts, like love and patience and faith, are showered abundantly on all of us, I can hand over to Him the burdens of control and judgment. “For through the Spirit, by faith, we eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness.” (Gal 5: 5)
So let me serve today, in love, rather than struggle, in self-righteousness. Because my God is a God of freedom, and He takes upon Himself that which none of us could handle, the hostilities and sins of our world. “For freedom Christ has set us free,” the apostle reminds me at the very beginning of the above-quoted chapter (Gal 5: 1). Let me embrace that, loving others and myself, just as He loves us, one and all. Glory be to Him.
